Colour Doppler Test

Colour Doppler Test is done on an Ultrasound cum Colour Doppler Machine which is easily available in any city of the country. Ultrasound is a black and white study of the organs of the body. Colour Doppler test is used to study the flow of blood in the arteries and the veins of important organs of the body. Colour Doppler test studies the flow of blood in the vessels and identifies any kind of blockage in the vessels which is preventing proper flow.

Different types of colour doppler tests are - Renal Colour Doppler, Abdominal Colour Doppler, Penile Doppler, Carotid Doppler, Pregnancy Colour Doppler, Arterial and Venous Colour Doppler of hands and legs. 2D Echocardiography is also a colour doppler test of the heart. Penile colour doppler test is done to measure the flow of blood in the penis for people who complain of erectile dysfunction. Pregnancy Colour Doppler is done around 30 weeks to know the growth status of the foetus in the womb.

Test and Results

The colour doppler test does not require any kind of preparation like fasting and can be done at any time of the day. The patient just has to lie down on a couch and the doctor will put a probe on the body part which needs to be examined. This is a completely non-invasive test and causes no pain or discomfort. The test can take 15-45 minutes depending upon the severity of the disease found in the test. For penile doppler test, the patient is given Viagra tablet before the test. In some patients where Viagra is unable to cause erection, an injection of Papavarine is given on the penis.

CT or MRI Angiography gives more accurate results in the study of blood vessels but requires non-ionic contrast to be injected to the patient. Patients with poor kidney function cannot be given this contrast. Colour Doppler test does not require any contrast and is therefore totally safe. CT or MR Angiography are far more expensive than colour doppler test and are also not available in smaller cities.
